Positive
Psychology was founded by a Professor of
Psychology, Martin E. P. Seligman. He defines
the discipline as the “scientific study of
optimal human functioning (that) aims to
discover and promote the factors that allow
individuals and communities to thrive”. In
essence, it can be described as the study of
happiness and the cultivation of strengths. The approach is rooted in prevention and
wellness. It focuses on happiness, wisdom,
creativity, potential, personal strengths, flow
states, what makes life worth living and overall
psychological health and well-being.
Findings from studies of Positive Psychology
show that in order to lead truly fulfilling
lives, we need to have a purpose that goes
beyond meeting our own needs. To have a
meaningful life, we need to be actively engaged
beyond our own individual needs so that we can
gain longer lasting satisfaction. This may
include contribution to community and
recognition of how we add value to the world.
