Shamanic
practice and its techniques help us reconnect to
ourselves, each other, our communities and the
great cosmic story - the Earth and the great
mystery we are all a part of. According to lore,
these practices date back 50,000 years. This
tradition forms the roots of all healing and
spiritual models. Whether Celtic, European,
Native-American or Aboriginal origins we can all
trace back our shamanic ancestry. The teachings
have gone through many transformations, as
mountain peoples migrated to lush farmland and
then crossed the ice in Siberia into thick
forests of the American continent. Today, we're
going through another evolutionary change as we
bring ancient teachings into the 21st century.
Although the outer form of the teachings
changes, the inner form has remained the same.
A shaman is a person whom through various
techniques such as breathwork, drumming and
dreaming can change their state of consciousness
and journey outside time to the non-ordinary
realms of magic and mystery. Traveling beyond
the 'matrix' of ordinary reality to contact the
spirit world to seek wisdom, knowledge and power
to help heal the individual and the community.
The shaman makes contact with his spirit guides
and power animals to effect changes in ordinary
reality. Working closely with nature and the
elemental forces is a very important part.
Shamanic experiences are part of everyday life,
the cycles of birth, death and re-birth are an
intrinsic part of our reality. This pattern is
repeated throughout our lives as we are
continually being born into new experiences and
dying to old habits, behaviour patterns and
belief systems. We are all on an adventure of
self discovery, the calling is to set out on
this quest consciously.
